For homemade and gift bottles, include whatever you like. Commercially sold wine must follow strict labelling rules — see below.

Label sizes

A 750 ml wine bottle usually takes a front label about 3.5 × 4 inches (portrait) or 4 × 3 inches (landscape); some wineries use labels up to 4 × 5 inches. Half bottles and 375 ml dessert wine bottles need smaller labels of about 2.5 × 3 inches. Measure the straight, flat part of your bottle before printing — Burgundy bottles have sloping shoulders and a shorter flat area than Bordeaux bottles.

Printing and applying

  1. Print on matte or textured label paper; kraft and cream stocks give a craft-wine look.
  2. For bottles that will sit in ice buckets, use waterproof vinyl label paper or a laser printer.
  3. Remove old labels by soaking bottles in warm water with a little baking soda, then dry thoroughly.
  4. Apply the label from the centre outwards to avoid bubbles; a pencil line or a strip of tape helps keep it level.
  5. For gift bottles, add a neck tag or ribbon to finish.

Commercial wine labelling

If you sell wine, labels are regulated. In the United States, the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB) sets rules for brand name, class and type, alcohol content, net contents, name and address of the bottler, sulfite and health warning statements, and label approval (COLA). The EU, UK, Australia and other markets have their own rules on mandatory information, allergens and, increasingly, ingredient and nutrition details. These printable labels are intended for personal, gift and event use; commercial producers should follow their regulator’s requirements.

Home winemaking records

Good notes make better wine. The batch log records the juice or fruit, yeast, starting and final specific gravity, temperatures, racking dates, additions and bottling date, so you can repeat successes. Potential alcohol can be estimated from gravity readings: roughly (original gravity − final gravity) × 131.25.

Formats

Print-ready PDF label sheets (US Letter, four 3.5 × 4 in labels per sheet; A4 with “Fit to page”), editable Word templates and an Excel winemaking batch log.
